Need expert advice on my plaster walls
Hello,

I am looking for some advice on painting my plaster walls. My husband and I moved into our house a couple years ago. When we did we painted our living room walls with no primer. We did not clean them first either. Of course now I know I should have done some research before doing this be the paint now chips off. It usually chips when something has been sticking to it such as our leather chair or sticking tacky. It is an older home though I'm not exactly sure when it was built but i do know they are not new plaster walls. The paint we put on was a latex Valspar paint I believe. We are now getting ready to repaint the living room again. I need to know what I need to do to ensure that this next paint job lasts.

Thanks!
Ashley

A little late now. Without a proper bonding coat to the plaster anything put on the walls is not going to stay stuck very well.
About the best you can do now is clean it, run a screen cloth on a sanding pole over all the walls, wipe it all down agin with a damp cloth to get the dust off, then paint it.
(screen cloth and a sanding pole are sold in the drywall area at any box store.)
I also would have stopped by my local real paint store not a box store for painting advise. That's all they do, there going to have great advice and better products avalible.

How old is your house? My plaster walls are covered in calcimine paint and take special steps to get regular paint to cover without chipping off. On some walls the paint literally peeled off in sheets and this was with good oil based kilz primer. Google it and see what the remedies are. I wound up steaming off the top layer of paint before priming with a correct primer. Not fun, but that really bad wall is finally fixed and painted.
Worth a look for you.
