Only place putty should have been used is around sink, tub drains and under a sink.
Anyone done any plumbing work there lately?
Are you on a well?
Checked the faucets aerators to see if it's in there to?

We just bought the house two months ago. We are on a well and recently had to have the lines repaired from the well because there was a leak inside the well and right outside. I trust the plumber who did the well work.
There was some work done on the master bath (That is where we saw the putty) but it was before we moved in. They removed a tub and put in a shower unit. We have already found some work in the crawl space that did not look like it was done to code. Ex: crazy way they ran the pipes, they cut a floor joist to make room for a pipe, etc.
We just happened to discover this putty because we were changing the shower head and ran water without it on.
We do plan on removing all the aerators.
We are just baffled how it could be inside the pipe instead of on the outside

Putty would be used on drains where it meets something like a tub or sink.
Sure it's not paste or Teflon pipe tape instead? Paste and tape would be used on the pipe threads.
Putty would look like Silly putty but softer.
