Replacing Shower Drain In Concrete Slab
I live in Florida and my home has a concrete slab. My shower pan is part of the house slab and is recessed 3 ½” below the house floor level slab. I am remodeling my shower and have relocated and replaced my old shower drain. I have chiseled up the slab I have purchased a Sioux Chief 2” PVC Square-Head Shower Pan Drain Model # 821-2PQCP from Home Depot.

Do I concrete all the way up to the PVC pipe that comes through the slab and if so do I need to put some type of protective material between the drain pipe and the new concrete?

Also, I assume I should apply a concrete bonding agent to the existing concrete before applying the new Sakrete 5000 Plus Concrete Mix?

How long should I wait after the slab repair before I replace the mud bed?

From the bottom up:

Subfloor
sloped mortar bed
liner
mortar bed
tile or other surface.

Jaybee, thanks for responding.

The Sioux Chief Link you sent me is for a wood subfloor installation and does not answer my three questions.

(1) Do I concrete all the way up to the PVC pipe
that comes through the slab and if so do I need
to put some type of protective material between
the drain pipe and the new concrete?

(2) Also, I assume I should apply a concrete bonding
agent to the existing concrete before applying
the new Sakrete 5000 Plus Concrete Mix?

(3) How long should I wait after the slab repair
before I replace the mud bed?

Just treat that drawing like the wood floor is your recently demo'd concrete and it will be exactly what you need

You will pour your new concrete up to the PVC drain. The only provison is to add some packing (paper, cloth etc.) to the weep holes on the drain to keep them open

agent to the existing concrete before applying

A bonding agent cannot hurt. The thicker your new slab is and the courser the sub-surface below then the less a bonding agent is needed. For a shower, if you have a slab remnant that is still structurally strong and you add at least 2" of new concrete above, the bonding agent will not be needed. Again though, it doesn't hurt and is an easy and inexpensive step.

You just need to wait for each layer to cure - usually overnight - before adding another layer. You should be able to do this in 2 pours - one to replace the slab thickness and make a sloped surface for the liner and the second to continue the sloped surface and to give you enough thickness above the liner to install tile.
