I want to run a new spigot outside and I have a brick exterior. Have a couple of questions. Should I start my new hole from the inside or outside? If I go from the outside (drilling the brick first), will I need to change bits once I hit the wood? Also, will I need a hammer drill? I've seen two types of bits. One looks like a regular drill bit, but I have also seen a masonry hole saw. Which should I use?

You can start from either the inside or the outside - depending on where you have access and if you need to spot a particular location from inside or out. You'll need a wood bit when drilling wood and a masonry bit with a hammer drill for the brick. For the size hole needed for a spigot, go with a drill bit not a hole saw.

to add to jaybees reply. start with a small diameter bit in the brick and gradually increase the size. It'll make drilling easier and lessen the possibility of damage to the brick. Also, if you can ,drill through a mortar joint

Always start from the outside, reason being it will blow out the brick if drilled from the inside and you will end up with a huge mess on the outside.
I've seen so many plumbers and electritions do this then I get called in to fix it.
Your going to need a hammer drill to get through the brick then just a cheap paddle but will go though the rim joist.

start from outside and go in so you dont bust the face of your and make sure your useing a frost proof faucet so as not to creat a futur problem use a combo drill one that has a push button to change to over and dont forget to install foam insation and seal around faucet mark location of ears on faucet and drill two 1/4 holes in brick insert to plastic toggles put small amount of caulk in both sos to stop water penetration and use stainless steele screws to mount and u will be happy all yr round because u just reduced any maintenance to removeing hose in the winter
