ticking noise in water lines??
Hi all!! New to the forum, looking for some advice..obviously. Anyhow, anytime water is used in the house, we can hear a ticking noise in one (or more) water lines in the house. Starts as a rapid ticking then as the water is running, gets slower until it stops. Not quite sure of the cause? By the way 60ish year old bungalow.1 Upstairs bathroom.Finished basement. Thanks alot for any advice.Cam

i have heard that before..found it to be one of two things
a peice of solider that dropped into the pipe during construction
and the water is tumbling it around...or a 1/2" fitting inside a 3/4" fitting doing the same thing
is it a ting, ting, ting....when water is on, then stops when water is off? bummer, gonna need a doctors stethascvope to find it

has house house undergone a rehab or had water pipe worked on..its trash in the pipe...maybe a pebble

I was only asking if recent work had been done.

I must be going blind, I didn't see your last sentence or I wouldn't have posted. " has house house undergone a rehab or had water pipe worked on..its trash in the pipe...maybe a pebble"

Hey thanks for replying. Now that you mention it ...I did about 3 years ago put in a 2 piece bath in the baseme nt and did use pex to connect to old copper supply lines!! What is the problem in your opinion? I could replace with copper if need be...Just thought I'd try pex at the time. Thanks again. Cam

People on other DIY sites have been complaining left and right that after installing pex pipe they gotten hammering, vibrating pipes, just to name some.

Here's a sight that tries to make light of the situation.

Sorry folks got to go for now..

I have found that a ticking noise when water is used comes from the drain pipes changing temperature from the waste water. The drain pipes expand slightly making the noise. After a few minutes the temp has equalized and the noise subsides. It's difficult to solve unless the offenders are exposed.
