I removed the drain plug in my bathroom to clean it out. When putting it back in, and trying to install the horizontal rod and clip, the clip just falls off every time I close the plug. Gravity will not allow it to stay on. If I adjust which hole it goes into so that it stays vertical, the drain plug won't open sufficiently to allow water down. I am obviously missing some trick I'm not aware of.

Has the clip been bent so that it is too loose?

I've tried it loose and I've tried it tight as I can press it. Falls off every time due to gravity.

I think there is a little confusion by the terms "bathroom drain". Do you mean BATHTUB DRAIN, or a SINK DRAIN? Sounds like a sink drain situation to me, could be wrong.

Yes sorry, it's a bathroom sink drain. I will try to get a pic posted to help.

OK, that makes more sense.

The system has 5 main parts: The drain plug assembly, a rod with a 1/2" diameter plastic ball on it, a small spring clip with two holes in it, a bar with spaced holes in it with a thumb screw on the top end and the plunger rod that comes down from the top of the faucet.

If you look at the drain plug assembly, you'll see that the very bottom is a loop-type part that makes a hole. This part is set off-center. When installing the drain plug assembly, put the off-center hole towards the back. When you install the rod with the ball on it from underneath, the rod must pass through the hole int he bottom of the drain plug. From there, slid one hole of the spring clip on the rod, slid the rot through one of the holes on the multi-hole piece and then slid the other half of the spring clip on the rod. From there, slid the multi-hole piece up over the plunger rod and tighten the thumb screw.

Fine tuning is done by either loosening the thumb screw and moving the multi-hole piece up or down or repositioning the rod through a different hole and resetting the spring clip.

Thanks Jaybee. I went to your link and saw what I see under my sink. I have put the clip on properly. The problem is that the clip doesnt stay horizontal and as soon as I open the drain, it falls off and the unit comes apart. If i adjust it so that it stays horizontal all the time, the sink drain won't open sufficiently to allow water to fully drain. I don't know how to resolve this and can't believe how difficult this is. Is there another type of mechanism I can replace this with where this won't be such an issue? Thanks.

Here's a pic. As you can see, when the drain is fully open, the rod is down and everything falls apart. I cannot get this rod horizontal while the drain is open.
