So I want to build a water distilation unit for an NGO in rural Nicaragua. Resources and budget here are very limited, but all that is really required is to boil the water and collect the vapor. I have access to 12 or 24 volt DC current via a solar panel array.
My first thought is to try to find a used heating element and try to water proof it in some way. This assumes that a normal heating element can be run on DC, if this is incorect, let me know. As far as water proofing the element, I am thinking of trying to embed it in some sort of ceramic. Once the water is vaporized, it should be easy enough to collect.

takes a lot of power to heat water to boiling. why not look into using an ultrasonic source to "boil" the water instead? like the paddlewheel home vaporizer units, a motor turns a wheel full of spikes, and the ultrasonic waves generated by the wheel cause vaporization with less power use.

Do you have fuel available to build a fire?
If so just build an old time still like want they use to make corn liquor.
No moving parts, no power needed.
