I have a 1974 Mercury 65hp 3 cylinder that has some minor prop damage. It's getting close to the time to park it in the driveway, cover it up and dream till next spring comes around. I am planning on changing the fluid in the lower unit before it gets too cold and am thinking it may be a good time to remove the prop and have it repaired. We have 2 good prop shops in the area. My question is...what is the correct way to remove the prop. Will I need to "block" the prop to keep it from turning and if so what do I need to do to keep it from turning? The prop was a new one that was installed last year by a marine repair shop (now closed) so it should not be frozen on the shaft (hopefully). Any and all help is appreciated.
Craig-O: Yeah man this is easily done by holding onto the propeller blade and turning the prop nut counter clockwies until the prop nut is remove from the propshaft then remove the prop by sliding it of the the shaft. In some cases their is a "Tab Washer" that holds the nut in place, so the tabs must be removed from the prop nut first then the prop nut can be removed!
