Question: What type of enamel paint should I use to add color detail to some of my silver charms?

I would use an acrylic enamel which is commonly found at most major craft stores. I personally use FolkArt brand acrylic enamel. You could also use DecoArt No-Prep Metal Paint or a good set of permanent markers.
Unlike the paints the markers will give a softer translucent look to the applied color. The big difference in using any of the above is that the 2 paints are permanent when cured and do not need a sealer. The markers on the other hand will have to be sealed. Smile

Thanks for your suggestions Flo - I couldn't find any books/web articles on this technique after hours of searching. I'll need to practice for sure. My hope is the paint will stick and stay permanently secure. Although the charms won't get too much abuse/action, I wouldn't want the paint to chip off too easily. I'm open to anyone who wants to share their experiences - good or bad. -Rosaria

I have been using both the acrylic enamel and the no-prep metal paint I mentioned above for years. They are both permanent if allowed to cure properly and will not chip off. I have even used them both on outdoor projects over the years and they have held up against the elements beautifully.
I have always colored my metal charms using the permanent marker technique because I like a transparent look and not a heavy opaque application. Then I just spray them with a clear acrylic sealer. Smile

Flo... again I thank you for your welcome tips and suggestions.

Other questions entered my mind ... firse, before I start, should I rough up the surface with a light sanding or file so the paint will stick since some of the charms have a rodium finish, some are sterling and some are just part silver? And second, then should I be cleaning them after sanding with a vinegar or what in an effort to get the paints/markers to adhere from the get-go?

Again, I'm open to all experience/tips and thank you in advance. -Rosaria

If the charms have a rodium finish you might want to lightly sand them so the paints go directly to the metal surface. You will want to clean the surface before painting. If using the acrylic enamels or the metal paints you will find the directions for doing so right on the bottles. Smile
For most metal projects I do the vinegar wash then a good rinse.

Hello, I am new to this message board and would like to know what kind of sealer can be used to protect the painted surface when painting silver charms?
Thanks.

Hi Molly,

There are several ways you can seal the painted surface. Here are some the ways that I use.

1) A good clear acrylic spray

2) A good decoupage finish works just fine

3) Another fun finish for charms that I've used is Inkssentials Glossy Accents or Plaid's Dimensional Magic. Both of these products put a protective finish on your project while at the same time creating a 3D raised surface. It creates a faux enameled effect. This is one of my favorite finishes when making jewelry projects. Smile
