I have an electric range with coil burners (3 small, 1 large) and a white surface. I was going to clean the top and replace the drip pans but there is a ring of scorched junk around the large burner. It's rock hard black stuff that has resisted all of my efforts to remove or even soften it, using a variety of cleaners and tools (baking soda paste, dish detergent, Zep Citrus, ammonia, toothbrush, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser). I've tried laying wet sponges and strips of paper towel over it and it doesn't even soften it.
I've even considered unhooking the electric sockets that the burners plug into and removing the top so that I can actually soak it in water, but that would be a pain in the neck.
Is there any way I'm getting this junk off, at least not without destroying the surface? A lot of the stronger sounding cleaners, like oven cleaner, say not to use them on painted surfaces, which has limited my options to milder stuff that is proving ineffective.
