HOW 2 Clean 'Carnuba WAX off of Marble!? Sign In/Join
posted
Ok; I learned Marble Refinishing in 3 days; for my white calacatta marble dining table. the 3rd step was the SEALER; AND LAST, was the Carnuba 'type wax, to protect it. Now;- I've got residue of the carnuba was, in grooves, as if when I applied it with a scotch brite type applicater, (WHICH was recommended) Now I have a residue thin, almost greasy-ish that won't come off. What to do?! thx Larry NYC

I would try cleaning that greasy film off with Mr. Clean, Fantastik or any other general purpose cleaner you have kicking around the house.

If that doesn't work, go to any office supply store and try to buy some white board cleaner spray or liquid.

Since Bayer patented the first alkyd based polyurethane in 1956, "polyurethane" has replaced Carnauba wax as the clear coat of choice over hardwood floors. One company that still makes Carnauba wax finish for hardwood floors is a company called Trewax. A company called Beaumont Products Inc. makes a wax stripper which Trewax sells under the name Trewax Instant Wax Stripper and it's MSDS can be found here:

http://www.trewax.com/msds/Tre...%20Wax%20Remover.pdf

It says the active ingredients in it are 1 to 6 percent ethanolamine and 5 to 10 percent 2-butoxyethanol.

2-butoxyethanol is also known as ethylene glycol butyl ether, or EGBE for short. This is a very common and inexpensive solvent found in lots of household cleaners, like Mr. Clean and Fantastik.

Additionally, whiteboard cleaners contain lots of EGBE. Here is the MSDS for EXPO whiteboard cleaner:
https://arts.ucalgary.ca/theat....theatres/files/EXPO WHITE BOARD CLEANER MSDS.pdf

It says it contains 10 to 40 percent isopropyl alcohol and 10 to 40 percent EGBE. The rest is almost certainly water.

If none of the above work for you, just Google Trewax and mail order the smallest quantity of Instant Wax Stripper they sell from them.

Carnauba wax is still very commonly used as a car wax, but so far as I know, no one makes any products for stripping wax off of cars.

Finish the job!

All you need to do is to polish the marble/wax....

An auto "buffer" would speed the job.....a big fluffy bath towel and plenty of "elbow grease" will also work

I would use acetone, use rubber gloves and paper towels, rub hard. I've installed many granite & marble tops and acetone was used on all of them without hurting the stone.

detailing technique for grooves: use a knife blade or a mini-screwdriver blade to push a piece of towel through the groove. a Q-tip if wider.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
