        Lower window sash will only raise 4 inches

        I have several double-hung windows on a second floor. When I try to raise the lower sash on any of these, they will automatically return to a height of 4 inches. I'm thinking this is done as a safety feature to prevent children from falling out of an upstairs window. You cannot make them stay open any wider. How do I adjust these windows to allow full opening?

        Not a safty feature, somethings wrong with the window.
        #1 A picure of the window would sure help. Need to see what type window you have and need a picture with the window held open facing the inside of the jamb to see how you window works.
        An old wooden window would use weights behind the jambs, vinyl windows can work at least three differant ways.
        Anderson windows and a few other use a balance spring in the head jamb, old vinyl windows used a spring, still others count on just friction.
