online_dealsentry way for a split level
We have a traditional split level ranch, i find the entry way non-welcoming. We have stair that go up and down right by the door. the foyer is almost nonexisitant which makes it tricky when we have guests. we have to open the door move out of the way climb up the stiars and have the guests come in walk done the stairs until all of them come in, close the door then have them walk up the stiars to get back to the foyer to climb the stairs up to ge to the living room. is there a better idea to over come this for split levels.

JaybeeThat's what makes it a split level. Not much you can do short of building another entrance somewhere. The thing is, most split levels still have some exterior stairs to get to the front door, so any new entrance would require some serious outdoor stairs. Entering on the lower level is not too welcoming as it's usually garage, family room, utility room or guest bedroom space.

joecaptionNever could understand the logic of that style house. From the loss of living space, no place to even hang coats as you come in the door to the situation you have.
A long time ago we had a customer that had bought a split level, but had really wanted a ranch.
$100,000 later we had removed the whole center of the house, raised the doorway, filled in all the block where the lower windows had been, back filled the whole front yard, added retaining walls and a walkway to the front steps.
So it can be done but would be cheaper to just buy a new home that was what you wanted.

mosternazI lived in one of those houses - never again. Whatever item I needed was always on the other level. I would hang a rack on the wall for coats and not much else you can do.
